Texans Injury Bug
Football is a high aggressive sport
that puts strain on your body every snap made especially if you are a defensive
lineman or offensive lineman. One of the Texans star players had to get put on
the reserve/retired list due to that aggressive nature. The Texans made an addition to that list on
March 14th by including tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz for three concussions gained
by him last season. Texans coach Bill O’Brien had this to say about him “We
have a lot of respect for C.J. and we support his decision to retire,” while
also adding “I know this was a difficult decision for him. C.J. has been a
great teammate and we appreciate his efforts over the past four years. We wish
him success in the next phase of his life.”
Before the beginning of last season
the Texans gave Fiedorowicz a three year, 22 million dollar contract that also
added 10 million dollars guaranteed. The Houston Chronicle stated the Texans
reworked Fiedorowicz’s contract when the news of his retirement came about.
Around the time the Texans gave Fiedorowicz the extension, included in it was a
de-escalator that will reduce his base salary by 2.8 million dollars if he
happened to get cut or retire from a preexisting condition such as a
concussion. Fiedorowicz gained his first concussion last season during training
camp and his second one during the Texans’ season opener. The medical staff
placed him on Injured Reserve in early September of last season, but he
returned to the active roster in Week 10. Fast-forward three weeks later,
Fiedorowicz left a game versus the Tennessee Titans with a concussion and was
placed on Injured Reserve again for the third concussion gained last season.
Since C.J. Fiedorowicz was placed on the Injured
Reserve list at the beginning of last season, The Texans leaned heavily on two
solid tight ends in Ryan Griffin and Stephen Andereson. Ryan Griffin had his
fair share of concussions as well as he also suffered two concussions last
season that placed him on Injured Reserve in November. Although it was one less
than C.J. Fiedorowicz it makes you think will Ryan Griffin lean towards early
retirement as well due to the condition. All in all the Houston Texans suffered
numerous of injuries to the offense including one that prevented them from
making the playoffs, Deshaun Watson tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament in
practice making a cut away from a defender. The injury bug affected the Houston
Texans heavily last year.
