Mass Shootings
On February 21st, 2018 a
tragedy happened due to a mass shooting at a school in Florida. This is one of
many mass shootings on government property at an educational safe haven. The
topic of mass shootings makes society wonder what can the government do to fix
the situation and when. Many ideas have been laid out as having panels in
hallways to cut of sections of the school to stop the mass shooter. In addition
to that allowing a teacher to bear arms, so that they can stop the shooter the
same way they’re stopping lives or giving the resource officer a gun instead of
having a Taser with Pepper Spray. One idea in mind is having more resource
officers to guard all the entrances as well as including a metal detector to stop
the shootings from ever happening. Another idea is to make students wear clear
book bags just in case something does go by the metal detector undetected.
There are many ways to stop these mass
shootings on or off government property, but it makes you think is it really
the government’s top priority. These events have been happening a lot tripling
since the year 2011. During 2011 to 2014 a mass shooting had happened once
every 64 days. The term “mass shooting” can be defined in many ways, but USA
Today described it as killing 4 or more people. Mother Jones gave several
different mass shootings described as random rampages in public places
concluding with four or more victims also. The average of mass shootings from
2011 to 2015 were 5 per year which is a small amount, but what if it happened
in an area you are in while studying or watching a movie.
Contributing factors that allow these events
to keep happening were listed above which is lack of security. Another is
failure of government background checks because of uncompleted databases or
shortage of staff. What is more mind bobbling is that you can buy a high
powered rifle or shotgun at age 18, but can not get alcohol or a handgun until
age 21. Laws of the United States of America should get alternated a little to
make America more safe instead making it one big battleground. If these
incidents keep going unhandled then random purges like these will keep
happening until resolved. Cleaning up the problems mostly talked about after
the incidents happen will allow the situation to die down instead of building
up.
