NBA All-Star Weekend
This past weekend is one of the
NBA’s most viewed moments besides the NBA Finals. All-Star weekend was in
effect in Los Angeles for 2018 and had America glued to their television sets
for three days. It started on Friday with the celebrity game as Team Lakers
went against Team Clippers. The players on Team Lakers: Sterling Brim, Nick
Cannon, Terrence Crawford, Rachel DeMita, Jerry Ferrara, Marc Lasry, Caleb
McLaughlin, Candace Parker, Nate Robinson, Drew Scott, Tracy McGrady and Kris
Wu played a hard fought game against Team Clippers: Anthony Anderson, Brandon
Armstrong, Miles Brown, Win Butler, Andre De Grasse, Stefanie Dolson, Jamie
Foxx, Dascha Polanco, Bubba Watson, Quavo and Jason Williams.
Team Clippers defeated Team Lakers
75-66 through four quarters of descent basketball. The MVP for the celebrity
game was Quavo with 19 points, 5 Rebounds and 3 Assists on 7 for 10 shooting.
Following the celebrity game were Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Verizon Dunk
Contest and the JBL Three-Point Contest that were held on Saturday. The Taco
Bell Skills Challenge ended with a guard being the champion as the big man
Lauri Markkanen came up losing by a long shot as Spencer Dinwiddie raced
through the cones, passed through the tire, made a lay up and raced to the
other end of the court to drain a three before Lauri Markkanen could make his
lay up.
Next Contest viewed was the Verizon
Dunk Contest that ended in high fashion. The winner of the competition, Donavon
Mitchell, won with flying colors as he dunked over comedian, Kevin Hart, as
well as his kids. The runner up, Larry Nance Jr., came up short as he had his
former pro dad, Larry Nance; assist him with a pass to complete a windmill dunk
with full extension. Even though the crowd went crazy and cameras flashed in the
background, the judges had the final say and crowned Donavon Mitchell the new
Slam Dunk Champion.
Last competition of the day, JBL Three-Point Contest, ended with last years rookie, Devin Booker, ending the event as a record holder scoring 28 points making 20 out of 25 shots. Runner up, Klay Thompson, came up short by 3 points as he scored 25 points in the final round of the JBL Three-Point Contest. Capping off the All-Star break was the All-Star game with Team Stephen vs. Team LeBron. High paced without defense the game ended in high scoring, but close game play as Team LeBron beat Team Stephen 148-145. The MVP of the game, LeBron James, made a game sealing layup with 34.5 seconds left on the clock to defeat Team Stephen. This was a good way to end the All-Star break since the NBA abandoned the East vs. West jerseys since 1951. This should be the beginning of a new era that should take place as well in 2019.
